THE FUTURE OF X-RAYS: FROM RADIOGENIC TUBES VS NANOTUBES - WHAT DOES TECHNOLOGY HOLD?
Field-emission CNT-based X-ray technology offers advantages over traditional thermionic tubes, including electronic programmability and flexibility in the fabrication of distributed sources. This makes it attractive for physiological imaging and tomographic systems. While generating X-rays with CNTs is relatively easy, achieving power, stability, and reliability for clinical use has been challenging. Thanks to advances in cathode and source materials and design, the performance of CNT sources has improved significantly. Today, they are not limited by the CNTs themselves but by the thermal management of the anode. Arrays of CNT sources enable innovative Tomo-synthesis imaging devices, some of which have already been approved for clinical use, and X-ray tubes based on CNTs are already being used in NDT and Security.
